Summer Sizzler Turkey Burgers
Ah… SUMMER!!! That time of year when a mans thoughts turn to… BURGERS! YEP! All the burgers! Especially them tasty BBQ burgers!
Now. Back a couple of years ago… I was not too picky when it came to burgers. I LOVED them all. BBQ’ed burgers… fast food burgers… any and all burgers! I ate them all and pretty much ALL the time. Hence why I was 70lbs heavier back then than I am now. Don’t get me wrong… I love a good burger. But nowadays I am a bit more picky when it comes to what kind and when I have them.
When I started my road to healthier eating… I was not gonna give up burgers. Nope! No way! So I discovered how to enjoy burgers in a healthier way: Turkey Burgers. With a variety of different options!
Ground turkey breast is the leanest option in terms of fat so BOOM! Burgers to enjoy. HOWEVER… it is usually what you PUT ON the burger where the extra calories (and not to mention sodium) come into play. Mayo, cheese, ketchup, bacon… MAMA MIA! That can get out of control quick!
Here is a recipe I use weekly to enjoy a tasty burger and not feel guilty about enjoying one!
- 3 pounds ground turkey
- 1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup finely diced onion
- 2 egg whites, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Tips: I will used crushed whole wheat crackers sometimes instead of bread crumbs. I have a blend of Italian spices that I like to add to the mix to give it just a little more flavor. And SOMETIMES… I will add ¼ cup of fresh parmasain cheese and mix it in! It all depends on how my day has gone food wise and if I have stayed on track.
- In a large bowl, mix ground turkey, seasoned bread crumbs, onion, egg whites, parsley, garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into 12 patties.
- Cook the patties in a medium skillet over medium heat, turning once, to an internal temperature of 180 degrees F (85 degrees C).
Tips: It is VERY important to watch the temperature because turkey can dry out quickly. When making these burgers… keep a close eye… these are not like regular burgers where you can just throw them on the bbq and let them go… Turkey burgers need attention.
Now… this is my favorite part… dressing them up!
Open Faced Turkey Burger
- 1 toasted slice of Veggie Bread or Ezekiel Bread
- 1 Turkey Burger (prepared above)
- 3 slices of red pepper
- 4-5 cucumber discs
- hot sauce
This is my favourite way to prepare these burgers. But you can experiment with any healthy options!
Tips: Stay away from butter buns or white buns… go open faced and save yourself the calories! Like bacon? Go turkey bacon on the burger! Leaner and heathier! Ketchup is loaded with sodium… go for mustard or a hot sauce!
